Our Literacy Work in Colombia
In 2014, we established our first reading group for children living in deprived areas in Manizales. Today, we have expanded to new communities across Colombia to bring a safe space for: literacy support to children facing difficulties to learn to read and write, parent mentoring to encourage them to become their child first teacher, books and literacy packs distribution for low-income families and earning English as a second language by implementing Dingo App.
Our digital learning tool enables us to reach children in remote communities where internet connection and educational resources are scarce. We bring children a wide collection of e-books, audiobooks and literacy games in both Spanish and English.
Every week, children join our reading group where we read fun stories together, practice writing exercises and share a meal. These groups are focused on having fun whilst the children learn.
Every six months, we distribute our literacy packs full of books, notebooks, colors, and pencils to encourage children to continue learning with their families from home
We host English lessons during school holidays to encourage children to learn English as a second language. We welcome international volunteers who are native English speakers and are looking for a cultural experience in Colombia while they make a significant social impact.
We deliver workshops for parents or caregivers to educate them on the importance of nurturing and creating the habit of reading in their children at home so they can become the child’s first teacher.
In December, we organize an event to bring together families and share a special afternoon to celebrate Christmas together. Thanks to donors, we can provide each child with a Christmas gift.
Dingo App is a digital learning tool that develops and enhances the literacy skills of children in both; Spanish and English.
We are bringing together innovative technology, e-books, games, and locally curated content to advance the learning of children aged 4-10 years who have limited or no access to education and technology. At the moment, we are running this program 4 locations in Colombia: Buenaventura, Manizales, Bogota and La Guajira.
How Important Is Technology in Education?
You may think that technology could be a distraction. Still, according to multiple research, the effective use of digital learning tools in classrooms can increase student engagement, help teachers improve their curriculum design and incorporate different learning styles.
With our Dingo App, we are bringing together innovative software and hardware, e-books, literacy games, and locally curated content to advance the learning of children aged 4-10 years who have limited or no access to education and technology.
