Improving Children’s Literacy Skills in Latin America
We believe every child has the right to quality education yet in Latin America and the Caribbean there are 512 million children and adolescents out of the education system.
As a response to the vital need for Latin American children to have access to books at home and literacy support, the World Literacy Foundation has been implementing Aprende Leyendo since 2014.
This literacy program focuses on children from 4 to 14 years living in disadvantaged communities in Colombia where 41, 411 children and adolescents have been affected by the war, being the rural children the most affected. To close the gap between urban and rural areas and build sustainable peace in Colombia, we need to create an inclusive and equal education system.
Urgent Literacy Recovery
Millions of Colombian children have been impacted by the pandemic, and without any effective reading intervention, they are simply at high risk of becoming functional illiterate adults. We must prioritize the needs of those in disadvantaged conditions to ensure free and inclusive education for all.
At Aprende Leyendo, we provide weekly reading sessions in Manizales and offer quality digital learning tools for many children in rural areas of Colombia to create an inclusive and equal education system.
We must act now!
This year is your chance to provide Colombian children with quality digital learning solutions to improve their literacy skills and help them to reach their full potential.
Why Literacy?
At Aprende Leyendo, we believe in literacy as the foundation of lifelong learning and education. People who cannot read or write experience difficulties with simple everyday tasks such as reading the label of a medicine bottle, filling in a job application or understanding a traffic sign. When we help someone to acquire literacy skills, we are empowering them to access to better opportunities in life to break the poverty cycle.
Early Intervention is Key
Research confirms that a child’s early years brain development shapes the adults they become, the success they achieve and the contributions they make to the economy and society.
Our work includes educating new parents to support their children in their learning, providing regular reading groups, and distributing books and other literacy resources to young children who may lack access to them.
